Elders
Jesus Christ appointed
His disciples as leaders of the first church. Subsequently, His
followers also appointed servant-leaders in the churches that they
established. The first and all subsequent leaders are accountable
to Jesus Christ for how they lead His church.
In accordance with this,
SPC is led by a group of leaders (“elders”) who are
ultimately accountable to the Lord Jesus for their actions and decisions.
These men, both before their selection and during their service,
will be evaluated based on the standards for elders found in the
Bible as to their modeling of Christian truth and life.
Our elders function as
a close-knit team, recognizing that each elder possesses special
gifts and insights necessary for the ministry. Thus each elder takes
an active responsibility in the ministries of SPC in accordance
with their designated area of service.
New elders will be recognized
by the existing elders acting in conjunction with the prayerful
advice and evaluation of the potential elders by the entire SPC
congregation. The congregation will have an opportunity every two
years to evaluate the elders collectively and individually and to
consider the possibility of potential new elders. Such an evaluation
may also be a basis for stimulating existing elders (either individually
or collectively) to greater effectiveness and/or for consideration
of replacement of elders.
Efforts will be made
to keep the elder team to a reasonable size limit in order to expedite
decision making. Qualified elders will be permitted to rotate off
of the elder team for personal reasons and may later be reinstated
with the permission of the other elders. Elders may be removed due
to a lack of modeling Christian life and truth or a lack of available
time to give to the demands of leadership.
Since SPC is an elder-led
church, based on Biblical principles of spiritual maturity, the
final decision on all matters rests with the elders.
